Definition
The tow line emergency release system is the arrangement that allows a tug crew to rapidly release the tow under load when the tug becomes endangered.
Why it matters
In girting and similar emergencies, the time window to release the tow can be only seconds. Slow, unreliable, or misunderstood release arrangements can turn a recoverable event into a capsize.
Failure modes
- Brake or hook does not release under load
- Crew are unfamiliar with the release sequence
- Release is obstructed by modification or poor maintenance
- Release acts too slowly for the developing heel
